BACKGROUND
The Shilka ZSU-23-4 Anti-aircraft Self-Propelled Gun was developed in the 1960's as a replacement for the ZSU-57-2. The Shilka has a shorter firing range than the older vehicle but it's radar fire control and increased rate of fire make it much more effective. The Shilka is employed in pairs, 200 meters apart, with a matching pair of SA-9/GASKIN SAM systems, 400 meters behind thier assigned battalain. Together they provide defense against low flying aircraft. The Shilkas can also be used against anti-tank missile sites, like TOW vehicles.
Based on the chassis of the PT-76 Tank, and the ASU-85 self propelled gun, the Shilka is armed with four liquid cooled 23mm cannons with a maximum firing range, against ground targets, of 3,000 meters and against aircraft as flying as low as 2,500 meters. 2000 rounds are carried in the tank. The ammunitions us usually a mix of 1 AP round for every 3 HE rounds. Resupply vehicles can carry another 3000 rounds per cannon. The guns are aimed with the help of a GUN DISH radar system. The Radar is powerful but short ranged and can be defeated by ECM. The Dish can be used deployed or retracted. In case the radar is destroyed the guns can be aimed manually.
Many versions of the Shilka have been produced. The differnces between the models is mostly in the types of storage boxes and in the mounting of the guns. An updated Ukrainian model replaces the GUN DISH with a newer sensor pod that includes; a day/night camera, a laser range finder. Above the sensor pod is mounted a six shot SAM Launcher.
