I know the Zentran and Meltran are warriors breed by the protocultures. I know the protocultures created the EH'vil series zentran. And teh EH'vil serires(Protodevlin) took over the supervision army. But i know jack didly about the Zolans! Could someone take the tike to tell me a little background information about thier culture and way of life?

The most important thing to note about Zolans is that they are marsupials, which means that they carry their young in a pouch and about four other traits that I can't recall right now. It also means that they can not crossbreed with humans or Zentraedi. They can undergo the same growth process that Zentraedi go through. Most also have a 'furry snake' that libes a sort of symbiotic existance with them.
Zolan's are not cut little elves. They have pointy ears, like many marsupials, but they have fairly human personalities. They can hate and kill, they will shoot first without asking question. That's one of my favorite parts when Basara gets shot just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and then when he won't shut up, he gets pistol-whipped and knocked over a ledge.
Zolan's have their own police force, who are pretty active hunting space whale poachers, smugglers, etc. I have some pics. I'll put them up later.

Which makes me wonder then why Zolan females have breasts, as external mammary glands seem to be the preserve of placental mammals only (hence the name)? Any biologists care to speculate, or would this be better asked in the stats thread?

Anime Biology mate, you have Anime Physics after all, why not a biological version
Only one thing that I think might be different. You mentioned Zentran and Meltran? Those are from Macross II which were created by a humanoid race called the Marduk in order to emulate the creations of the Protoculture who created the Zentraedi and Meltrandi as their proxy warriors.
Technically there would be the Protoculture and supervision army stuff:
Zentraedi and Meltrandi (I've seen a variation on the spelling as well)
And the Marduk Stuff:
Zentran and Meltran
who use completely different mecha and stuff.
If I'm wrong someone please correct me.

I thought that Meltran and Zentran referred to male and female Zentraedi in the singular.
On the UNSD you see references to things like the Meltran such and such so I've always reckoned I could use the terms. But again I'm not 100% sure.

This is what i know about the Zentradi. Its all baesd of wether you look from the perspective of the protocultures(witch might have fathered the marduk) or the Zentradi themselves. The term "Zentradi" is like mankind or humanity. It refers to the colletive of males and females. Zentran and Meltran are merely saying man and woman. Thats what the protocultures saw it as. The Zentradi themselves see each ther as two diffrent races. Thats where the terms Zentrandi an Meltrandi come from. Or at least thats the way me and my friends see it. We have discussed it many times of wether they are two indivdual races or one race. We have determined that its all perspective, from the creators compared to the creations. Hope that clears that mess up.
And one other thing. PLEASE! OHHH! PLEASE! Dont bring the Protodevlin into this. Were're still in debate about that.

Opps forgot about the marduk. We kinda decided that they were decendants of the protocultures and that they just picked up whatever Zentradi cloning facilities were left and designed new mecha for them. I also think that they reduced the friction between the Zentran and Meltran by ether genetics or that the emulation bit. I think that all i know, or all we've agreed on, about the Zentradi.

Or conversely, considering how defenceless a human infant is (and how long it takes them to develop), Zolans developed two sets of glands. One inside the pouch for when the foetus is developing and an external pair for when the infant is at the same stage of development as a full-term placental baby.

<puts on Butthead voice> "You said snake A-Huh huh huh huh huh"
Seriously though aren't they meant to be some sort of symbiotic organism in the same manner as Gubaba (mutant mood tribble) in M7?

Sorry to dredge a slightly old thread back up again, but I've had a few more thoughts on the Zolans.
First off, has anyone considered the possibility that the Zolan snake might be some sort of Spiritia parasite, feeding off the Spiritia every living being emminates? But being native to Zola would seem to preclude them being a pet other characters could end up with. Basically you'd have to go to Zola and find a snake that hadn't already found a Zolan. The bond would simply be that the snake has already found a host and won't move unless the host dies.
Also, although the Zolans are apparently marsupials, if they are also a product of Protoculture like humans and Zentraedi it wouldn't make much sense to make them genetically incompatible. A Zolan is able to increase in size using Zentraedi technology for example in M7 Dynamite.
Maybe the rationale for 2 sets of mamary glands could be because the Zolan female has both placental and marsupial characteristics, and uses one or the other depending on what the dominant gene-set of the foetus happens to be.
Or maybe it's a bit like when Zentraedi mate with humans, you get the Zentraedi gene being dominant. So maybe female Zolans beget Zolans, no matter the race of the father.
Gah, you can tell I've got some coursework to do, I've ended up going off at a total tangent to avoid doing it!

All I've added are theories and conjecture, basically more ideas for discussion rather than hard and fast facts, but it seemed to make sense to me.
Prehaps the protocultures simply didn't want their races to crossbreed. It could cause difficulties in their experiments. So they perhaps learned from their experience with humans and zentraedi and made the Zolans different?
Just thoughts though...

Oh, I thought the soap opera explained the whole "marsupial" thing, thanks for clearing that up
It isn't often you actually get anime that tries to explain stuff like that

Erm… how could the Protocultures know that Zentraedi and human were breeding, roughly 10,000 years before it happened?
Biologically, different species (which generally humans and marsupials are) cannot interbreed. A dog and a cat cannot make a dat (or cog). However, different breeds of dogs can breed together. (same goes for cats). So you could consider humans to be the lap dog, Zentraedi to be the Irish Setters and the result of the breeding: the mutt).
